Niinpä, ulkona on TODELLA kylmä...
Silti eilen piti työmatkalla loikata ottamaan muutama kuva sataman yllä nousevasta auringosta.

Still I had to stop for few minutes yesterday to snap few photos of the raising sun.

Winter came finally in Helsinki

Talvi tuli viimein... ainakin hetkeksi. Tosin en olisi lunta enää kaivannutkaan, kevät siintää jo mielessä... Täytynee kuitenkin varmaan tyrkätä kevätajatukset hetkeksi syrjään ja asennoitua talveen.

Winter came finally in Helsinki. At least for a moment. I didn't miss snow anymore, I have already spring in my mind. But can't be helped... I have to accept that January definitely is a winter month here in the North.

Welcome 2012

 
Vuosi vaihtui hyvässä seurassa maukkaan ruoan kera hyvien ystävien kanssa.
 The last evening of 2011 we spent with good friends eating tasty food.

Lasten iloksi ammuttiin raketteja.

Our hosts arranged a fireworks show.

 

Uuden vuoden ensimmäinen päivä valkeni aurinkoisena.
Year 2012 started with a sunny day.

Ketulla oli ollut herkullinen loppuvuosi.

A fox had a New Year's feast.

Järvi ei ollut vielä jäässä.
Thre isn't any ice yet on the lake.

Puolukoitakin löytyi vielä.

I even found lingonberries.

Sireenissä oli silmuja...
Lilac had buds of leafs...
Luonnossa vuosi alkaa ainakin hieman epätavallisissa merkeissä, mitähän vuosi muuten tuo tullessaan?...
A year ago we had  very cold weather and tons of snow, let's see if the year to come will be different also otherwise....

Lähdemme pian aivan Helsingin lähistölle ystäviemme huvilalle viettämään uuta vuotta, tiedossa on hyvää ruokaa, kuohuvaa ja ystävien hauskaa seuraa.

Onnellista uutta vuotta 2012! Tavataan taas ensi vuonna.

We are soon taking off to our friends' villa very near Helsinki. There will be good food, champagne and company of good friends.

Aattoillan vietimme kotona...

Christmas Eve we spent home...

...soimme mm. pateeta viikunoiden ja pahkinoiden kera, graavia kalaa, possun lapaa, omenaa ja palsternakkaa, karpalojaadyketta ja kotitekoisia makeisia...

...we ate among other things pate with figs and toasted pecans, grawlax, slow roasted pork shoulder with apples, cranberries, cranberry semifreddo and home made candies...

Joulupaivan aattona suuntasimme anoppilaan...

Tapaninpaivan vastaisena yona nousi myrsky, joka vei sahkot, vesipumppukaan ei ilma virtaa toiminut. Vasta pari tuntia sitten saimme sahkot. Tien ylikin oli kaatunut monta puuta ja olimme eilisen motissa. Ilta kului kynttilan valossa lukiessa, nukkumaan menimme iltayhdeksalta...

On Christmas Day morning we headed to my inlaws...

During night between Sunday and Monday there was a  storm. We left out of water and electricity for 30 hours, we couldn't go anywhere as there were several big trees fallen over the road. Last night we did read in candle lightand went to bed early.

Uusi myrsky on nousemassa, mutta nyt on tyynta ja aurinko paistaa. Viime talven kinokset ovat vain kaukainen muisto.

A new storm is rising, but now wind is still and sun is shining. The huge snow banks of last winter are only a distant memory...

It's my birthday and there is still plenty of snow

And how do these two things relate to each other?

Birthdays are always some sort of milestones... I also calculate if the spring is on time or delayed by my birthday. If most of the snow has melted by my birthday, spring is in it's average pace. This year there is still plenty of snow and ice (the photo is taken on Thursday morning).

The next measuring point is our wedding anniversary in two weeks.., usually all the snow has melted and sea is completely ice free by then in Helsinki. I wonder if that's the case this year.

About my age...

Have visited dentist and had my eyes checked during the past week. The dentist sounded slightly surprised to when he noted I had all teeth left and in good condition?!?! I suppose all the coevals aren't as lucky... The opticialn told I don't need reading glasses, btu when the time comes when I cannot see to read wiht my normal glasses, my hidden squint helps me with reading... Thankfully I have my next hair appointment only end next mont, I don't want ot discuss about hiding the first grays just now...

Mitä tekemistä syntymäpäivälläni ja lumen määrällä on keskenään?

Paljonkin. Synttärithän ovat aina jonkinlaisia virstanpylväitä ja mittailen kevään kulkua merkittävien päivien mukaan, niitä kun keväällä riittää (omia ja muiden merkkipäiviä, pääsiäinen, vappu, helatorstai... niiden säät yleensä muistan edellisiltäkin vuosilta). Yleensä syntymäpäivääni mennessä lumi on miltei kokonaan sulanut. Tänä vuonna Helsingissä on vielä runsaasti lunta (kuva on otettu torstaiaamuna).

Seuraava mittauspiste on hääpävämme parin viikon päästä... Silloin viimeistään ovat lumet yleensä täysin sulaneet ja meri on jäästä vapaa. Saapa nähdä, miten tänä vuonna käy.

Ai niin... ja siitä iästä...

Kuluneella viikolla olen ollut hammaslääkärissä ja näkötarkastuksessa. Hammaslääkäri kuulosti ilahtuneelta kun saattoi todeta minulla olevan kaikki hampaat jäljellä ja vielä hyväkuntoisetkin... kaikilla ikätovereilla ei siis ilmeisesti ole ihan jokainen oma lego tallella. Optikko totesi, etten tarvitse vielä lukulaseja ja että kun se aika tulee, voin näppärästi kompensoida piilokarsastuksella lukulasien tarvetta... Onneksi kampaaja on vasta useamman viikon päästä, ettei tarvitse juuri nyt puhua ensimmäisten harmaiden peittämisestä...

Fun in the sun

Tarmo,  who was given a loving home by my mother and father in law when he came from a shelter, loves his life.

He can run around the fields and wood surrounding their house, did the snow and when he finally gets tired, he can stretch on sofa and have a peaceful nap...

Tarmo, löytökoira, jolle appivanhempani tarjosivat rakastavan kodin, on hyvin tyytyväinen nykyiseen elämäänsä.

Tarmo saa juosta vapaana ympäri tiluksia, kaivaa kaivamasta päästyään ja kun uupumus viimein valtaa, Tarmo voi heittäytyä sohvalle rauhallisille nokosille vailla huolen häivää..

Waiting for spring... and we have a winner

Waiting for spring, but winter is still here... and holding us in strong grip...

I and Husband had a walk on ice in front of Helsinki on Sunday (see those stairs, they are for ice swimmers... quite popular in Finland, but I couldn't imagine dipping in that literally ice cold water...).

It was a freezing cold day, but still, when I closed my eyes, I could at least imagine sunrays were already warming my face. Still, it was nice to end the walk in a cafe with a cup of hot cocoa and a shared sweet cinnamon bun.

I did have a draw last night; the lucky winner of the fabrics is Violette.

Odottelen kiivaasti kevättä, mutta kyllä talvi vielä pitelee meitä tiukassa otteessaan... Uskaltauduin jäälle Uunisaaren tuntumaan sunnuntaina. Pakkanen oli aika pureva, mutta kalliota vasten tuulettomassa paikassa nojaillessaan saattoi jo kuvitella auringonsäteiden lämmittävän... Silti oli ihana päästä Caruseliin lämmittelemään kaakaon ja jaetun korvapuustin ääreen.

Suoritin eilen kangastilkkukilpailun arvonnan; arpaonni suosi vastaajaa numero 11. Kankaiden voittaja on Violette.

Shades of red

Shades of red - full of energy! Winter is still in full force, but these bright, energic shades give me hope... spring will come, we just have to wait a while...

Punaisen sävyt ovat täynnä energiaa! Talvea on vielä hyvän matkaa edessä, mutta pirteät sävyt antavat toivoa... kevät tulee, meidän täytyy vain odottaa vielä tovi...

The beauty of winter nature

I am no a winter person, but I have to say nature looks stunning when there is plenty of snow. Still... three more months of snow and cold days... Spring seems to be so far away...

En ole talvi-ihmisiä, mutta täytyy sanoa, että luonto näyttää upealta lumipeitteessään.
 Silti... vielä kolme kuukautta lumea ja kylmyyttää... huokaus...

Doggie fun in snow

One of the best things on Christmas break was to play with Husband’s parents dog Tarmo. he came from a shelter a year ago. Tarmo was found on a street in Helsinki, nobody asked after him. Now he has a loving home and large grounds to run around.
After jumping and running in freezing cold snow, it was wonderful to lie down and enjoy the warmth of fireplace.
Yksi joululoman hauskuuksia oli leikkiä appivanhempieni löytökoiran Tarmon kanssa. Tarmo tuli taloon vuosi sitten eläinsuojeluyhdistykseltä. Se oli löydetty Helsingistä harhailemasta kadulta, eikä sitä kukaan kaivannut. Nyt sillä on rakastava koti ja laajat pihapiirit, jossa juoksennella.
Kun ensin oli loikittu ja juostu jäätävän kylmässä lumessa, oli ihana heittäytyä takan lämpöön.

New Year's Eve

New Year's Eve on the countryside, but still very close to Helsinki with friends, good food and some sparkling was a wonderful start for this year.

Hope also your year started well.

Uuden Vuoden aatto maalla, mutta silti hyvin lähellä Helsinkiä ystävien, hyvän ruan ja kuohuvan kera oli loistava startti tälle vuodelle. 


Toivottavasti sinunkin vuotesi alkoi hyvin.

My year in photos

2010... long days at work, long holidays, breezing cold and heatwaves, happy and sad times, cooking and cocktail making... elements of my year.

January was extremely cold, but pretty.

In February I was in Paris for a fair, bur sneaked few moments for my self inthe city as well.

In March I finally started to believe spring maybe would come after the long, cold winter.

In April I celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary wiht Husband and took my mother out for a high tea for her birthday.

In May we had and early, lovely  heatwave we had waited for the whole long winter.

In June we watched the Royal wedding and saw an amazing rainbow at midnight.

July was finally time for our big adventure; a fantastic five week holiday in Australia and Hong Kong. I even met another blogger in Australia, sweet Charlotta of Space of Inspiration.

The first days of August we spent in Hong Kong, enjoying the five star hotel and an exciting city before returning home.In August we also had our yearly crayfish party and visited market square in Helsinki.

In September I was in Paris again, shopped on flea markets, walked around "new" neighbourhoods and had exciting dinner at the Hidden Kitchen.

In October "our" squirrel built a nest on our window sill, but at the end of month he/she took her nest with her and moved upstairs under the roof...I also saw the Swedish royal couple Victoria and Daniel in Helsinki.

November was sad; my dearest friend died after may years fighting against her cancer, we miss her so much.

In December winter came early, it was very cold and snowy to wait for Christmas.

2010... pitkiä päiviä töissä, mutta niiden vastapainoksi myös pitkiä lomia... jäätävän kylmää ja kiehuvan kuumaa, iloa ja surua, kokkausta ja cocktailin ravistelua...Niistä oli tämä vuosi tehty.


Tammikuu oli kylmä, mutta myös satumaisen kaunis.


Helmikuussa olin Pariisissa messuilla, mutta onnisuin varastamaan muutamia hetkiä myös itselleni.


Maaliskuussa aloin uskoa kevään kuitenkin saapuvan pitkän, pitkän talven jälkeen.


Huhtikuussa juhlimme viidettä hääpäiväämme ja vein äitini syntymäpäiväteelle.


Toukokuussa koko talven kaipaamamme helle viimein saapui.


Kesäkuun kohokohtia olivat kuninkaalliset häät ja juhannusyön sateenkaari.


Fantastisen viiden viikon Australian ja Hong Kongin lomamme aika oli heinäkuussa. Tapasin matkalla jopa toisen bloggaajan, viehätävän Charlotan, joka kirjoittaa Space of Inspiration-blogia.


Ennen kotiinpaluuta elokuussa vietimme vielä joitain päiviä Hong Kongissa nauttien kiinnosavasa kaupungista ja viiden tähden hotellista. Elokuussa syötiin myös rapuja ja käytiin Kauppatorilla.


Syyskuussa olin jälleen Pariisissa. Lähdin matkaan jo messuja edeltävänä viikonloppuna, kiertelin pikkukatuja sekä kirpputoreja ja kävin illallisella Hidden Kitchenissä, joka olikin jännittävä kokemus.


Lokakuussa "meidän" oravamme rakensi tarmokkaasti peää, jonka se kuitenkin muutti ylempään kerrokseen räystään alle myöhemmin. Todistin myös Victorian ja Danielin vierailua Helsingissä.


Suru saapui marraskuussa, kun rakkain ystäväni menehtyi syöpään.


Joulua odoteltiin lumisissa ja kylmissä tunnelmissa koko joulukuun ajan.

Advent calendar 5; Christmas weather

Christmas weather in Helsinki can be anything from rain and green grass to high snow banks and extremely cold weather.

This year winter began early, but as Christmas is still almost three weeks away,  so it's hard to forcast what the weather will be like then.


Joulusää Helsingissä voi olla mitä tahansa sateesta ja vihertävästä nurmesta korkeisiin kinoksiin ja tulipalopakkasiin.


Talvi alkoi ajoissa tänä vuonna. Jouluun on kuitenkin vielä miltei kolmisen viikkoa, joten on mahdoton arvailla vielä millainen joulusää tulee olemaan.

Winter came early

We already have snow in Helsinki, winter came early this year...

I am not a winter person, bu what can I do, I just have to adjust. I have to admit it gives nice Christmas feeling, as long as it lasts... I ma no sure this white cover will last till Christmas.

Helsingissä on jo lunta, talvi tuli varhain tänä vuonna.


En ole oikein talvi-ihmisiä, mutta minkäs teet... pakko vain totutella jälleen. Täytyy tosin myöntää, että lumi antaa mukavan jouluisen tunnelman, niin kauan kuin sitä riittää... En ole ihan varma, että tämä lumi kestää jouluun asti.

Snow fun

 

 

My inlaws took a dog from shelter 1 1/2 months ago. He is a very active young dog, few weeks ago he played four hours in the heavy snow (first day above 0 C in 75 days) and had so much fun! When he finally wanted to get in, he was really tired...

Appivanhempani ottivat löytökodista nuoren ja vilkkaan koiran 1 1/2 kk sitten. Tarmo leikki muutama viikko sitten yhteen menoon neljä tuntia raskaassa lumessa, mutta sitten se olikin väsynyt...
